Review

Are you looking for a rhythm based music racing game in the Andriod/iOS marketplace? Well, look no further. If it’s quick reflexes, creative graphics, or amazing music then ‘Beat Racer’ will not disappoint. At first glance, Beat racer seems like a combination of the PC game ‘Audio surf‘ and the mobile game ‘Subway Surfers‘.

In Audiosurf, you race through music tracks and collect bars. It is a music-adapting puzzle racer where you can use your own music to create your own visual gameplay experience.

In Subway Surfers, you play a kid collecting money, in an “endless running” experience (similar to Temple Run). Beat Racer is a game all about collecting beats, dodging obstacles, and out-driving bad machines to the rhythm of the music.

Gameplay

From the start, Beat Racer is all about collecting “Beat” while dodging obstacles with your car. As you gain more beat, you will start to fill up our boost meter. You can use their boost to take out enemies. A track is completed when the music is finished. As you play through the game, you can collect faster cars by gathering coins and gems. Spend money on upgrading cars or purchasing new ones.

Beat Racer’s  rhythm action mixed with impressive music tracks and colorful graphic give users an experience that will stick around for a long time to come. Beat Racer a free game although there is an in-game store. You can spend real money to acquire gems and credits. Users can use those purchased credits/gems to acquire new cars and new stages.

I heard about people having issues with the car’s movement. I did notice, at times, it was a little unresponsive for a quick second. Seems like a glitch that happens when grabbing red beats. I’m not entirely sure, but I did experience the little bug. I can see this being an issue for those who are chasing perfect scores.

Collecting & Upgrading Cars

As you collect more and more credits, you will find that you can spend credits on upgrading your car. Upgrading your car helps increase the speed of the car. The max level for a car is level 10. Each car comes with a set color palette. From shades of gold, teal, pink, white, and black. I found that upgrading cars and earning credits to collect more cars became my primary goal.

Controls

The game’s controls feel very nice and simple. You mainly just swipe left, right, up, or down. You can’t get much simpler than that. The simple controls help you immerse into the beautiful world easier and focus on the music and overall gameplay.

Music

The music in the game ‘Beat Racer’ was inspired by the world famous electronic artist ‘Daft Punk‘. Daft Punk helped set the mood for other entertainment productions such as the Disney remake movie ‘Tron’. The music ranges from electronic dance music to indie rock music.

The diversity shows that the game can be picked up by a wider audience and enjoyed by many different musical backgrounds. Some tracks got a little too down-tempo for me. I like to play the songs that are more up-tempo electronic dance tracks versus the slower ones because it helps me keep my reflexes active.

The Artist

The game features music from the artists: All Good Funk Alliance , Amo , Apalog , Ask You In Gray , Aubrey Wood , BH & Kirk Cosier , Carla Cappa , Cin3ma , Crazy Daylight , Dot Dot Dot , Felicia Barton , From Indian Lakes , JaimeLee , Jesse Weeks , Jonathan Clyde Jones , Julin , Justin Crosby , Kezwik & Protohype , Leo Islo , Liz Rodrigues , Lumious , Neo Cartoon Lover , Nesta , Push Songs , Sarah Ozelle , Sheldon Speed , Sonik Noize , The Cloud , The Schizofreniks , Torches , Van Anders , Venemy , and We The Ghost.

Graphics

Beat Racer has purely stunning graphics that change each stage whenever you gain more ‘beat’. Changing from shades of teal, yellow, pink, and purple. The graphics are very stunning and the design of the app helps bring this game together as a whole.

Every element of the game was designed as a full-3D using Unity 3D program. All space used as a background is implemented and developed with different modules and they are combined for each stage of the game. The game elements like music and background are linked organically and they are designed to provide fantastic audio & visual effects and the music effects in the same time.

Last words

If you interested in single player rhythm based music games, seriously check out ‘Beat Racer‘. This game should be easily accessible via Google Play Store or the iOS Appstore. The game is free-to-play and is accessible on many mobile devices.

Music games are big in the mobile market. But can music games make a comeback in the home console or arcade market?
