Popular video game retail chain Gamestop is about to publish its first video game. Song of the Deep will be released on Tuesday July 12th. Developed by Insomniac, the same team that brought you Ratchet & Clank and Spyro the Dragon. Song of the Deep is a 2.5D sidescroller that is set in gorgeous underwater environments ranging from underwater ancient ruins, to sea caves, and kelp gardens. Popular with many indie metroidvania-style games, Song of the Deep focuses on a rich story that is told without the use of dialog. The story centers on a young girl named Merryn who goes looking for her father after not coming back from his fishing voyage. The rich visuals and engaging soundtrack helps set the atmosphere of wonder in Song of the Deep.
Song of the Deep’s game page over at gamestop.com does a very good job at spilling all the details about the game. There might be a bit of an overload of information for some, but it has me hooked. The rich visuals and art form look very promising, and the story has an air of mystery that I cannot wait to solve and dissect. The game will retail at 14.99, which I think is pretty cheap for a game of this caliber and from a reputable development company. I think it will be one of those short and sweet games, with a rich story that leaves you with a sense of wonder once you discover its secrets. I’m sure it won’t disappoint. There are lots of gameplay videos over at gamestop.com, but you can take a look at the trailer below.
